Hiking in Vermont

No trip to this area is complete until we have made the pilgrimage to the country store in Barnard - specifically to the old-fashioned soda fountain in the rear. Plus, there is swimming to be had in sparkling Silver Lake, just a stone's throw from the store's porch.

Incredible Backcountry and Lovely Villages
5 Days and 5 Nights

This area of the state near Rutland eastward to the Connecticut River is loaded with footpaths and meandering back roads perfect for exploring. We walk along the Ottauquechee River and view Quechee Gorge just downstream of Woodstock, a small town known for stately buildings clustered around its oval-shaped green, for its in-town covered bridge, for the walks up nearby Mt. Tom, and for its recently-designated national historic park. We see the Plymouth area with its "chain of lakes" tucked away in the scenic mountains - a walk along Lake Amherst and one also near Shrewsbury Peak.

Another highlight is walking on the Appalachian and Long Trails near Killington or Barnard. A walk of less than an hour brings us to Deerleap Rock with its superb views of the mountains and valleys in the Killington area. Ancient hemlock trees in and rushing streams abound.

Mt. Ascutney presides over the Connecticut River and this entire area. There are interesting trails for us to follow to viewpoints. No trip to this area is complete, however, until we have made the pilgrimage to the country store in Barnard - specifically to the old-fashioned soda fountain in the rear. Plus, there is swimming to be had in sparkling Silver Lake, just a stone's throw from the store's porch.
